29/4/10 - League
Cobham Sports 0 Hamworthy Recreation 1
Cobham away on a very bumpy, bobbley pitch was never going to be an easy task and that was how the match proved to be.
The hosts took command from kick off and played in a manner as if it was they who needed the 3 points to be a step closer to the league trophy. The midfield battles were being won by Cobham and their left wingback posed a constant threat. For all their running and possession the hosts did not have a shot on target and it was a matter of time before Rec clicked into gear and got hold of the match.
The second half brought changes and sparked some life into Rec’s game. The visitors were denied not one but two stone wall penalty appeals and hit the woodwork and had an effort cleared from the line before the breakthrough came. Mike Motley, back from a lengthy and untimely lay off, controlled the ball superbly before spinning and driving the ball past the keeper to give the Greens the lead and one hand on their first league title in 5 years.
Further chances came and went as the game seemed to go on endlessly into the night. The final whistle brought relief as Rec looked to Saturday’s game with Westlands.
Hamworthy Utd Res. 3 Hamworthy Recreation 3
With the league won the final game of the season at Ham Utd gave the chance to rest some weary legs and give some players who had missed some minutes recently a deserved started.
The match started with Utd coming out of the blocks sharper than Rec. A corner that should have been dealt with found its way into the Rec net to give Utd the lead; 0-1. The lead was short lived as it gave the visitors a nudge in the right direction and a left foot strike from Dan Blackburn brought the scores level; 1-1. Another defensive lapse saw Rec concede a second goal, again from a set piece, before half time to go into the break 2-1 behind.
A penalty was awarded to Ham Utd early in the second period - much to the surprise of both sides! 1-3. The only time this season that Rec had conceded 3 goals and it left them with a mountain to climb in front of a sizeable crowd awaiting the presentation of the league trophy.
Some changes were made and Rec played a blistering last half hour to prove why they had been crowned champions. A goal from Mike Notley reduced the arrears (2-3) before a string of chances went begging after some exhibition passing and good work from, especially from Ashley Boyt on the left. Boyt was rewarded when he struck a much deserved equalizer after a quick free quick taken by Dan Manuel surprised the home defence; 3-3. The last ten minutes saw Rec throw everything at their host’s goal but to no avail.
Final score 3-3 and an entertaining second half. The trophy was collected by Captain Ryan Lucas and taken back to its familiar home in Ham Recs trophy cabinet.
