The “Cuthbury” played host to a huge game between, in many peoples’ opinion, the two best sides in the DPL. Rec needed 3 points to be confirmed as league champions but knew a slip up could spell disaster.
The game started evenly with very little to choose between the sides and few chances at either end. Nick Plank marshalled the defence with Rikki Walden out through injury while Shaun Brian seemed to win everything that came his way. It was not a free flowing game but with so much at stake this was understandable. The warm dry spell of weather also added to some unkind bounces and bobbles on the pitch.
The second half began with Rec firmly taking the game to their opponents and looking the more likely to score. The all important breakthrough came for Rec after a good move saw Jamie Moores put clear on the left hand side. His shot was parried into the path of an advancing Rich Sands who managed to keep his shot down as he shot into the net, much to the delight of all those playing managing and supporting the Green Army. Just moments later Mark Dykes could not make contact with the ball on the Westlands line when any sort of touch would have made it 2-0 and probably killed the game of. The final 20 minutes saw the game swing from end to end with the better chances falling to Westlands.
Neither team were able to score and the final whistle sparked celebrations with Rec clinching their first league title in 5 years.
