Hamworthy Recreation 3 Chickerell Utd 0
After a good week’s results for the Greens and a poor one for their visitors Chickerell, a mouth watering match was in prospect at Magna Road. A fine spring day brought a large crowd to the game wondering what the day’s game would bring.
An even start saw very little being given away by either side but their playing styles were in contrast. Chickerell looked to get the ball to their front men very quickly and support them while Rec passed the ball and probed their opponents more. The first goal came in the 20th minute and it was for the home side. A deep corner from the left was met by Jamie Moores whose header was in turn cleverly lobbed to the far post by Dan Blackburn and met by Shaun Brian’s to put a bullet header into the net; 1-0.
The home side now had the upper hand and, knowing Chickerell could ill afford to lose, everyone awaited a response. The Rec defence and particularly the central pairing of Rikki Walden and Brian dealt brilliantly with every ball played in their direction. Moores had a snap shot saved right on half time so the score remained 1-0 to Rec.
The crowd, and Rec, anticipated a “Chickens” onslaught in the second half but it was the Greens who put a strangle hold of the game. Good work from Moores saw Mark Dykes with only the keeper to beat, but he was denied by the gloveman’s legs. Next a Chickerell defender tried to hack clear a ball and hit his own player to make his keeper scramble to keep the ball out and the score still 1-0.
The home side were now fully on top and on the hour got the second goal of the game. A superbly struck quick free kick by Moores flew into the net to spark Rec celebrations; 2-0. At the other end the Green defence looked totally in control and about to keep their 4th clean sheet of the week. The whole team played and passed with confidence. Mike Notley was welcomed back into the fray after an injury lay off and looked as sharp as ever. A great Rec move saw Rich Sands drive the ball home to get the days third and put the tie well and truly beyond the visitors; 3-0. A late save from Kevin Leonard in the Greens goal preserved their clean sheet.
This was a huge result for the greens. The Championship is now in their own hands and 2 wins from the last 3 matches will be enough, regardless of other results.
