10/3/10 - League Cup
Hamworthy Recreation 0  Westland Sports 1
Westlands came to Magna Road off the back of some good results and brimming with confidence. The pitch looked and played up to its high standard but the football on the day did not live up to expectations.
The visitors started brightly and at times you could have been forgiven for thinking Westlands had an extra player as they moved the ball around at ease. That said there was little goal mouth action to speak of at either end other than a Rec header clearing the Westlands bar.
The breakthrough came and it was for the visitors. A neat ball found the centre forward in the Rec box and he made no mistake in smashing the ball home. From the home sides view a poor goal to concede.
The second half proceeded in the same manner as the 1st with Westlands looking the more lively, yet not producing much in the way of a goal threat.
The final 10 minutes saw the home side forced into trying to salvage their cup aspirations. A flurry of advances were thwarted by a strong resolute Westlands back line until a foul was made and a penalty awarded to Ham Rec. Sam Goodwin struck the penalty for Rec but unfortunately for him and his side it went the wrong side of the post. A late goal line clearance ended Recs hopes of an equalizer and forcing extra time.
All in all a fair result and maybe a blessing for Rec as they seek the league title with 12 matches to fulfil in April.
