13/3/10 League
Poole Borough 1 Hamworthy Recreation 3
Having dropped 2 points in our last outing all eyes were on this fixture with 'Boro' with the rest of the league, especially the hosts, hoping Rec’s unbeaten run comes to an end. With Rich Sands missing due to a dead leg it gave the opportunity for Mark Dykes to come into Rec’s starting line up; they also welcomed the return of Jamie Davidson having recovered from a broken foot.
The game started at a high tempo with little to choose between the sides. Boro were in the visitor’s faces and making it hard for them and it was they who took an early lead. From a Rec corner they broke at pace with their forward beating our offside line and holding off Adam Marsh to put a nice finish beyond the reach of Kevin Leonard in the away goal.
Not the start Rec had hoped for. Worse was to come as Dan Blackburn was caught with what appeared to be a blatant elbow, but not in the Refs eyes. Blackburn sustained a badly broken nose and had to be substituted and take a trip to hospital. “Pip” Webb substituted as the visitors sought a way back into a hard fought physical battle. Dykes came closest with a shot stopped on the line by a Poole defender.
An uninspiring 1st half with much to do in the second period. A fully galvanised and upbeat Rec side took to the pitch in the second half and wanted to set about getting an equaliser.
With Davidson back from his travels and injuries and looking sharp (he was destroying his full back) and looked a constant threat. The deserved goal came fairly early in the second period with Jamie Moores being set free to beat the home keeper to put the greens firmly back in the game.
Had it not been for an alert keeper and some last ditch defending Rec would have got their second goal sooner than they did. It eventually came with Moores heading home an Ash Boyt free kick. Boro had a man sent off but with Rec playing like they were it had little bearing on the game as they were in total control. Webb hit the woodwork, Davidson came close on occasions and it was no surprise when Mike Motley beat the Boro offside trap to go clean through and calmly slot the ball home to seal the points for Rec.
After the game Rec manager, Gareth Daniel said “A massive three points in our search for the title and, with injuries and a one goal deficit at half time, Rec showed great character to come back and comprehensively control the second period. A good start on what will be a long tough title run in. Cup duty next week in which we hope to reach the cup semi finals.”
