Weymouth Res. 1 Ham Rec 2
Away at Weymouth was going to be a very hard mach for Ham Rec and it proved much harder than anyone imagined. After their 5-0 loss away the incentive for the Terras was huge. 2nd in the league and only having lost one match (to ham Rec) Weymouth were the visitors nearest rivals and would be keen to gain revenge.
With Shaun Brian serving a one match suspension Steve Trembath deputised for him in an otherwise unchanged line up from the previous week.
The game started with the home side setting the pace and passing the ball far better than the visitors. However, the game was only 5 minutes old when Jamie Moores was put clean through by a defence splitting Mike Notley pass and made no mistake in finding the back of the net to give Rec a 1-0 lead.
Weymouth did not let the goal effect them and continued to play their passing game seeking an equalizer. It appeared as though they had an extra player on the field as they out battled, out passed and were generally superior to their visitors in every area.
The equaliser came when Rec failed to deal with a corner and allowed Karl Foster to score from close range; 1-1.
For all the possession Weymouth had they failed to test Kevin Leonard in the away goal at any point but looked dangerous and the most likely side to score. On a rare Rec attack Notley went through only to be hauled back - clear for all to see other than the man in the middle and his assistant. Half time arrived with the scores level and the chance to try and correct our performance.
The second period started with Weymouth firmly on the front foot again. Rec’s problem was that every time they had the ball their players chose the wrong option or just failed to execute the correct pass. Again, for all the hosts possession Leonard remained a spectator - as did his opposite number.
It was midway through the second half before Rec got their first corner. From it Moores was denied by a defender on the goal line. This seemed to spark the Green Army into life and take the game by the scruff of the neck and play in a more familiar fashion.
A clearance put Notley clean through and his lob hit the bar when it was thought he had scored. Pip Webb and Sam Goodwin were introduced to the game and both made a valuable impact. The next attack saw Rich Sands have a chance but his shot fizzed over the bar.
With time ticking down it looked like the teams would share the spoils. Rec’s never say die attitude had other plans. A Rec corner was cleared to the left extremity of Weymouth’s box where Ash Boyt was arriving to hit a spectacular, unstoppable volley into the top right corner of Weymouth’s net; 2-1. The hill men were on their feet and Leonard ran the length of the park to join the goal celebrations.
Manager Gareth Daniel said after the match “A fine goal that deserved to win any football match. A huge 3 points for the greens; a reality check to the lads and an all round better performance will be required next time out. That said, all credit to Weymouth who were as good as anyone we have played this season”.
