Ham Rec 2 Holt Utd 2
Everyone knew a tough match was to be expected when Rec welcomed Holt to Magna Road. They were fellow title challengers with the added spice of having 3 of Rec’s former players.
The game started with Holt getting the better of the early exchanges and pinning the hosts back in their half, something Rec haven’t been used to. For some reason Hamworthy were not playing their usual passing game and could not get out of 2nd gear.
Holt deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute when an unmarked runner went through and gave Paul Maitland (deputising for the suspended Leonard) no chance; 0-1.
Half time could not come soon enough as Rec needed to re-group and get things sorted. Sam Griffin made way for Dan Blackburn and skipper Ryan Lucas went wide in an attempt to shake things up.
Soon after half time Rec were rewarded with a penalty when Mike Motley was brought down in Holt’s box and Lucas stepped up to convert the resulting spot kick; 1-1.
With their tails up Rec started to play their more familiar passing game and looked dangerous when going forward. Just after the hour mark the hosts took the lead when a neat move saw Notley smash the ball home to give Rec the advantage; 2-1.
From this point a Rec win looked on the cards till the dying minutes when Holt forced a tremendous reaction save from Maitland. They followed that with a shot that hit a post before they managed to score with a deflected shot; 2-2.
Rec’s performance over the 90 minutes probably deserved no more than a point although conceding such a late goal is always disappointing.
