Ham Rec 5 Weymouth Res. 0
What was an eagerly awaited and much anticipated match against Weymouth Reserves turned out to be one of the Rec’s easier days at Magna Road.
No sooner had the game kicked off than the greens were celebrating a Mike Notley strike to put themselves one up; 1-0. With a goal that early Weymouth did not seem unduly concerned as they had 88 mins to get back into the game. That was not going to happen because Rec's tails were up and inside 5 minutes, after Sam Griffin took a near post corner for Ryan Lucas to neatly flick on, Shaun Brian dived in to head home the second; 2-0.
A shell shocked young visiting side did not know what had hit them let alone how to attempt to counter the home sides advances. The Rec back 4 were in complete control with Kevin Leonard in the home goal having the rarest of touches in the first half. The home sides midfield looked sharper, faster more determined and well in control. Couple that with Jamie Moores and Notley terrorising the Terras defence and it was not going to be a happy journey home along the coast.
Notley deservedly got the third after 20 min after some great work and a neat pull back from his strike partner Moores. There was enough time for Griffin to add a fourth (rounding the keeper after his initial shot had been saved) before half time after another slick Rec move. The only disappointment in the 1st half was the departure of Jamie Davidson early on with a fractured ankle. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
The second half could not live up to the 1st and Rec had been told not to concede primarily and try to keep the game lively. Their opponents offered glimpses of how they are the league leaders but anything they tried was thwarted by the “Green Army”. Rich Sands got in amongst the goals midway through the second period to give the score line a truer reflection of the game.
Without the services of Danny Hounsell and Ash Boyt this game showed the importance of having a good squad and with the reserves winning again it was a pleasing day. It is imperative to keep our focus and drive to keep the unbeaten run going. Everyone must keep their feet on the ground and take each game as it comes and not get carried away with one big result.
