Ham Rec 1 Cobham Sports 1
On a dull evening, both in weather and entertainment, a draw was hardly in doubt.
Whilst looking in control for much of the first half the home side created very little in the way of chances and it was their visitors who came closest to scoring.
The second half started and, where Rec hoped to raise their work rate, improve their passing and generally raise their game, they just could not get going - very unlike them.
Small moments turn a match. Tom Willis was denied a blatant penalty in the Cobham box. The ball was swiftly (long ball!) worked down field. Rec’s Dan Hayson was fouled just outside the box and the referee gave Cobham a direct free kick! Jon Lever took the kick and placed the ball well to the left of Kevin Leonard in the Hamworthy goal to open the scoring; 1-0. A good strike, to give him credit.
This galvanised the home side and they raised their game. After some good approach work Mike Notley volleyed the ball home from the corner of the 18 yard area giving the visitor’s keeper no chance, a “wonder strike”; 1-1. For ten minutes Rec looked busy but not like scoring.
A disappointing result but credit to Cobham who limited Hamworthy to few scoring chances.
