Wincanton Town 0  Hamworthy Rec 0

Nine men Wincanton defy the Rec to take a point – and they missed two late penalties.

What can be said about this opening day encounter at Wincanton....  The early exchanges saw Rec picking up the bits and pieces and generally looking sharper and hungrier than the home side.  That said, Wincanton worked very hard and limited the visitors front two from receiving much service or giving them much space, so Rec’s superior possession failed to create many openings.

Sam Griffin should have had a penalty awarded to him when fouled in the box but he persisted to get his shot away so the ref felt justified in his decision not to award the pen, how often do we see this?  Then came the first of the red cards.  The Wincanton player brought the card upon himself by lashing out with his feet at Jamie Moores, giving the ref no option.  This made Wincanton stiffen up and defend resolutely.

The second half was a similar story with the hosts occasionally, and sometimes dangerously, hitting Hamworthy on the bleak.  The second deserved red card (two yellows) made little difference to the game as Rec just did not deliver the right ball or choose the right options.  The visitor’s best chance fell to debutant Rich Sands whose shot, following a good move, hit the side netting.

An ill timed lunge by Dan Hayson (still feeling “the squeeze”?) led to a late penalty being awarded to Wincanton.  Kevin Leonard came to the rescue with a tremendous save, pushing the ball onto the post,
