18/9/10 - League
Hamworthy Recreation 6  Chickerell Utd 0
Chickerell were the visitors to Magna Road on a glorious late summer’s day with the pitch in fantastic shape to host a match between the league winners and runners up from last season. Mark Dykes came in for the injured Sam Goodwin up front in an otherwise unchanged side from the win at Holt the previous week.
Rec took control of the game from kick off, attacking the Chickens defence and looking dangerous every time they went forward. Mike Notley looked as lively as ever and rounded the keeper before some good defending saw his cut back hacked clear for a corner.
It did not take too long for the deadlock to be broken and it went to the home side. A tidy move saw the ball pushed wide to Russell Dominey whose delightful cross was met by Dykes’ head to give the greens a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later the same player rose to head home his, and his teams’, second goal of the day to give Rec a 2-0 advantage.
Further chances came and went before a defensive slip allowed a Chickerell forward a chance on goal but his shot hit the post with Kevin Leonard in goal having his angles correct and the shot covered. This was the visitor’s only real chance of the half as Rec defended solidly in the little they had to do.
Dykes claimed his hatrick in the 43rd minute after a defensive error by a Chickens defender allowed Notley to go clear with his shot being saved and the grateful Dykes on hand to give Rec a 3-0 lead with a tap in. This gave the visitors a huge mountain to climb if they were to get anything out of the game.
A slow start to the second period saw some sloppy final balls preventing the home side the chance to gain further goals and Chickerell happy to defend and sit in their own half.
Dan Blackburn and Rich Sands came on for Rec but the latter player sustained a rib injury after only a couple of minutes and had to go off again for another substitute, Rikki Walden who is recovering from injury.
The 66th minute saw Rec deservedly get a 4th goal after Notley rounded the keeper before a defender handled on the line and a penalty awarded. Adam Marsh dually obliged and scored from the spot; 4-0. Some last ditch defending and good goal keeping kept Rec at bay until the dying minutes with the Greens defence rarely been called into service.
Notley finally got the goal he wanted after a scramble with the visiting keeper; 5-0. In the 89th minute Notley nearly scored another with a swivel and volley that Bickerstaff in the Chickens goal did well to push against the bar. Dykes, following up, beat the keeper to the rebound to round off his afternoon with his 4th of the day making the score Ham Rec 6 Chickerell 0.
Not the best display of the season by any stretch of the imagination but a disciplined solid display with the score a fair reflection of the days play.
