Hamworthy Recreation 3  Wincanton Town 2
A 20 minute downpour made the Magna Road playing surface perfect for the visit of Wincanton. The slick surface made the opening exchanges energetic blood and thunder stuff with Rec looking the more controlled in small phases of play. Once again the team selection changed due to unavailability and suspension but the Greens seemed back to their upbeat selves and were passing and playing with desire , something that had been lacking in previous weeks.
The first real glimpse of goal went to the visitors who forced Kevin Leonard to make a good save after a corner was headed clear with a midfielder pouncing to strike and call the home keeper into duty. That made Rec raise their game and they started to pass and move the ball around with Wincanton at times helpless to stop them.
The opening goal came on the half hour mark with Jamie Moores the scorer. A ball in from the right was met by Moores’ head with the visiting keeper letting the ball squirm through his hands and into the net; 1-0.
Two minutes later a similar move saw Moores strike a volley goal bound with the Wincanton keeper not knowing much about his save.  Mark Dykes fired over when it appeared easier to score with a host of other half chances offering themselves to the home side.
A foul in the box left the referee no option other than to award Rec a penalty which Adam Mash slammed home to make the score 2-0.
A quickly taken free kick then saw Marsh receive the ball in Wincanton’s box, beat his man and get fouled. The linesman signalled a penalty but the referee who was 30 yards away decided Marsh had kicked his own ankles when about to score!! That was the end of the first half action.
The second period began with Rec on the front foot again but being unable to beat Rich Leach in the opposition goal - he was more than making up for his earlier error with some fine saves.
In a bizarre three minute period the game turned on its head.  A fantastic strike out of nowhere from a Wincanton’s Dan Golden, the ball bouncing just before reaching Leonard in the home goal, shocked the Rec players but worse was to come. A ball into the Rec box was met by a Matt White’s  head to level the scores at 2-2.
The Greens did not let it affect them and struck the post minutes later as they pressed to get a third goal.
The move of the match (and season so far) saw one touch passing cut the visitors apart with Wayne Holes effort being very well saved at the end of it to deny what would have been a magnificent goal.
The Wincanton keeper appeared to have been beaten several times by diving the wrong way for shots but saving them with his feet or legs on several occasions. With the clock ticking down Rec did not give up on getting a much deserved winner and it dually came. A Moores strike earned Rec three thoroughly deserved points in a pleasing performance. Goals however change games and in what was a very comfortable contest points could have been cruelly dropped
