7/8/10 - Charity Shield
Swanage Town & Herston 1 Hamworthy Recreation 3
The Swanage carnival meant an early departure from Magna Road to allow for the increased traffic heading for sunny Swanage. As the players arrived it was very warm and the sun was out but some threatening clouds were building. When the players emerged for kick off they were greeted by a torrent of rain which made the playing surface very slick.
With some key players absent and illness in the camp the diversity and togetherness of the team was vital. The team looked as slick as ever as Rec settled into their passing rhythm and looked to break down their hosts defence.
The Swans were full of running and looked dangerous in some attacks on the Rec goal hitting the post on one occasion against the run of play. New signing Russell Dominey posed a constant threat on the right side fizzing some great balls across the Swans goalmouth.
Mike Notley went close before Kane Daysh rose to head home from a corner. The only person in the ground that disagreed with the goal was the ref so the scores remained level at the break.
An injury to sweeper Rikki Walden meant a shuffle around for the greens but the players quickly set about getting a goal. Some half chances came and went before the vital breakthrough.
A pin point pass from Dominey found Rec forward Mark Dykes who held the ball before playing it into the path of Dan Blackburn who fired his shot beyond the Swans gloveman into the top right hand corner; 0-1. This lifted the Greens who raised their game by a gear and went at Swanage with purpose and found themselves 2 up shortly afterwards with Tom Vavrecka the goal scorer; 0-2. A third followed closely behind with Notley getting on the scoresheet; 0-3.
Numerous other chances were created but it was the hosts who scored, George Harvey getting a consolation goal; 1-3.
A hard fought match and much credit must go to the Swanage management and players who have had a turbulent summer period but appear to be firmly back on the right track. Hopefully Rec can get their hands on more silverware in what will be another long hard season with many teams challenging for the title.
